The Smithsonian Archives of American Art announced on September 19, 2007 that this year's recipient of the Lawrence A. Fleischman Award for Scholarly Excellence in the Field of American Art History will be presented on October 10 to H. Barbara Weinberg, the Alice Pratt Brown Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Dr. Weinberg has organized many special exhibitions, including American Impressionism and Realism: The Painting of Modern Life, 1885-1915 (1994), Winslow Homer (1996), John Singer Sargent Beyond the Portrait Studio (2000), Thomas Eakins (2002), Childe Hassam, American Impressionist (2004) and Americans in Paris, 1860-1900 (2006). She's currently preparing Telling Tales: American Genre Painting, 1765-1915 for The Met and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2009 and 2010. Weinberg has published many scholarly books, articles and essays on late 19th-century American art, including The Lure of Paris: Nineteenth-Century American Painters and Their French Teachers (1991).
