A group of 11 salt prints from the mysterious 19th-century French "L'Album Simart" are on view at New York's Hans P. Kraus, Jr. Fine Photographs.

Eleven nudes and apple tree photographs from the enigmatic L'Album Simart (ca. 1856-1860) are on view at Hans P. Kraus, Jr. Fine Photographs, 962 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10028 from April 7 to May 9, 2008. All but one of the prints have never been exhibited in New York.

Although products of an anonymous 19th-century photographer who perhaps worked in the circle of French sculptor Pierre Charles Simart (1806-1857), the salt prints from enlarged glass negatives are strikingly post-modern in technique. The images' mysterious creator was able to merge neoclassical idealism with seemingly contemporary visual effects. One Female Nude stands in the contrapposto position. The curved collodion ripples throughout the work infuse it with a distinct sense of movement achieved in the developing process.

Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday, 12:00 Noon to 6:00 PM. For more information please call (212) 794-2064. E-mail: info@sunpictures.com.
