The Art Institute of Chicago is offering free general admission in February 2008 to its permanent collection, lectures, screenings and family events. Among the museum's highlights are:
- February 2: Behind the Lions Day, a family event that introduces American heroes in the AIC's collection through gallery tours, art-making activities and more.
- Every Saturday in February: Conservation Conversations, where AIC scientists explain how works of art and artifacts are preserved using state-of-the-art methods.
- Every weekend in February: Question & Answer Discussions with AIC curators, scholars and experts.
- February 23 and 24: The Chicago premiere of The Gates, the HBO documentary about the Winter 2005 public art installation in New York City by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The Gates chronicles the project's 26-year development. It features archival footage of meetings and conversations between the two artists and various New York City government officials from the 1970s through 2005, when 7503 fabric-paneled gates were erected temporarily in Manhattan's Central Park.
From February 16 to 29, there's a separate $10.00 ticket fee that covers admission to both Edward Hopper and Watercolors by Winslow Homer: The Color of Light, two special exhibitions about these great American artists.
