New York's American Museum of Natural History has plenty of events planned for its annual celebration of Kwanzaa, the African-American holiday, on December 29, 2007.

The annual Kwanzaa festival at New York's American Museum of Natural History will take place on Saturday, December 29, 2007 from 12:00 Noon to 5:00 PM on all levels of the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life. The celebration commemorates seven principles of the African-American holiday:

  • Ujamaa (cooperative economics);
  • Umoja (unity);
  • Kujichagulia (self-determination);
  • Ujima (collective work and responsibility);
  • Nia (purpose);
  • Kuumba (creativity); and
  • and Imani (faith).

The afternoon's highlights include a marketplace, candle lighting, drumming, live gospel music, traditional African dance, a crafts workshop for children and a spectacular performance by Wunmi, the queen of Afro fusion.

All Kwanzaa activities and performances are free with suggested museum admission: $15.00 for adults, $11.00 for seniors and students and $8.50 for children.
